Responsibilities

Make-up artists apply make up - and usually style hair - for performers and presenters appearing on stage.

The style of make-up and hair depends on the type of production. It varies from straightforward, contemporary make-up and hairdressing to more creative and specialist techniques, e.g. for different historical periods and nationalities, ageing or special effects. Some actors may need to wear a wig and the make up artist will acquire, store and care for wigs, as well as dressing the wig and attaching it for the actor so that it is secure.

  • researching/designing the type and style of make-up and hair for projects
  • liaising with other production members, e.g. directors, producers and designers
  • ensuring the availability of materials such as the correct colours, period make-up, prosthetics like false noses and scars, wigs and hair decorations
  • evaluating the length of time required for each person
  • applying make-up and hair styling, often with other make-up artists, assistants or stylists.

Knowledge

  • up-to-date knowledge of all make-up and hair products, decorations and suppliers
  • have excellent knowledge of make-up and hair styles/techniques
  • knowledge of styles of makeup relating to different periods in history
  • knowledge of effects that can be applied to create a particular look
  • have a thorough understanding of lighting and other production processes
  • be aware of health and safety procedures.
