Visitor Services staff in the cultural heritage and visual arts sectors are responsible for looking after visitors' needs. They also undertake security duties in certain venues or galleries. The Visitor Services role is to ensure the safety of staff and visitors. They are also responsible for the collections and buildings. Their job involves the use of CCTV and a vigilant physical presence in the galleries.

They are part of a visitor-friendly team, and are present in gallery spaces, to help visitors get the most from their visit. They may work with guides and demonstrators help explain a cultural or historical object. They can also help to set the context to visitors of the museum or gallery for visitors. In smaller museums and galleries visitor service staff may have a wider range of functions.

They are responsible for working with visitors with any special needs or requirements.  They may also interpret and explain aspects of the service, exhibition or site. This ensures that visitors have a well-rounded experience of the institution.
