A theatre director co-ordinates all aspects of a theatrical production for the stage. They work from the production stages and rehearsals through to the final performance.
Directors are responsible both for the artistic interpretation and delivery of the written play. Typical activities for a theatre director include:
- Breaking down a script and analysing and exploring the content. They may also adapt it in collaboration with the writer or playwright
- Holding auditions for productions, hiring designers, musicians and other theatre workers
- Conducting rehearsals
- Communicating and liaising with actors, designers, technicians and stage managers
- Working with the set designer to conceive the overall look and feel of the production.
