Riggers are some of the technicians that work in the theatre & dance, broadcast and music industries. They are responsible for suspending production equipment, scenery or people onto either new or existing structures.
The specific areas they may work in are:
- Theatres
- Arenas
- Concert tours
- Corporate events
- Some aspects of film and television.
- Riggers are responsible for a variety of different task and types of installation. For example they may have to:
- Install lifting and suspension apparatus such as wire and fibre ropes, winches and pulley blocks
- Use powered hoists to move loads using lifting equipment in specialised ways
- Be familiar with both proprietary and adapted lifting equipment, including modular tubular aluminium 'truss' frameworks
- Work in consultation with engineers and other technical staff. In this capacity they may have to advise and find ways to move or suspend heavy scenery and equipment. This could include lighting or speakers used for an event or performance.
Senior riggers are in charge of devising plans for the installation of equipment. Their greatest responsibility is the safety of themselves, other production members, performers, event personnel and the public.
