Puppeteers animate and manipulate puppets as part of a theatre, television or film production. Puppetry is a performing art used to entertain adults or children.
There are a number of different types of puppets. They may be:
- Representational (figurative)
- Abstract in form
- Simple, animated objects.
Puppets are often characters that tell stories and communicate ideas. Puppeteers may be the principal 'performers' of a production or programme. They may also be included among other expressive media (performers, projection, music and dance theatre etc.)
There are very many different types and techniques of puppet, made from a wide range of materials. An experienced puppeteer is often able to operate and sometimes make most of these.
Puppeteers will often design and create their own puppets, using many of the same techniques as a toymaker.
