Production Managers in the theatre & dance sector oversee and co-ordinate the work of non-performers for a production.
They act as the lynch-pin between designers, directors, administrators, craftspeople, stage management and technicians.
In smaller organisations their responsibilities can extend to:
- Technical and personnel management of the technical and craft departments
- Budget control of new productions
- Building maintenance
- Transport and logistics
- Public entertainment licensing
- Staff training and development
- Global health and safety of the organisation
- Hiring temporary staff.
In large organisations the production manager tends to have a more limited role. In larger productions there will often be technical directors and managers to carry out part of the work. For example, a technical director may oversee all of the work of the lighting crew.
