Lighting technician

Lighting technicians in the theatre & dance sector are responsible for lighting performances. They take care of the creative and technical aspects of lighting interior and outside scenes. Lighting technicians work to alter the mood and shape of the visual image for an audience. They do this by arranging the equipment and adjusting the intensity of the light to different levels.

Their main responsibilities can include:

  • Liaising with the lighting director and designer to agree the lighting design
  • Establishing the lighting requirements
  • Plotting the lighting
  • Co-ordinating the equipment and the technical crew
  • Assembling all the lighting and filter equipment needed.

These backstage staff work on a variety of theatre and concert productions. Some of their work may also be broadcasted on television, or in film or video productions. Recorded work is often more complicated and technical. Working for film can involved complex lighting designs.
