Learning and education staff members provide support to teachers and development workers in cultural institutions. They work in heritage centres, museums and historical houses and other venues. Learning and education officers enable visitors to get the best possible educational experience from their visit. They may work with individual children or visitors, small groups or a whole class.
Learning and education staff members have a range of roles that varies with the organisation:
- The work often involves helping children and other visitors by explaining activities to them. They may also support them to make sense of an exhibition or visit so that learning opportunities are maximised
- Educational staff encourage people to develop socially, personally and educationally
- Ensure that visitors with special needs receive learning opportunities.
Education staff may manage an education unit. They introduce, activate and develop an education strategy for a site, historic house, visitor centre or museum. They are likely to work in collaboration with a range of other staff, including development staff.
