Inspectors of ancient monuments provide advice about specific objects of historical interest. They make sure that regulations are observed for ancient monuments. They also ensure that monuments are appropriately secured and in some cases open to the public.
Inspectors of ancient monuments have a very specific role in which they:
- Ensure that deterioration is kept to a minimum and that remedial work is in place to maintain / protect the monument
- Work with heritage bodies and local authorities to ensure that the site is preserved and documented
- Ensure that information is made available to the public about the monument
- Assess monuments to assess safety and advise whether a monument is suitable for visiting by the public.
Some ancient monuments may be in private hands. In these cases the inspector may have responsibility for ensuring that the owner complies with various laws. These include listing, conservation and preservation laws.
