Historian

Historians in the cultural heritage sector are responsible for investigating and providing specialist advice on the past. They may work on the cultural, architectural, and historic significance of different areas. This may include buildings, gardens, man-made landscapes and other historic places.

They may be involved with:

  • Examining, analysing, and recording historic places
  • Investigation and researching historical documents and papers
  • Identifying lost, destroyed or demolished historic features or fabric, and advising on strategies for investigation
  • Interpreting and assessing significance 
  • Liaising with local, national, community and sector interests in identifying significance and value
  • Applying conservation techniques to a range of objects.

Historians investigate their wider historical and cultural significance of objects and places through research and interpretation.

  • They assess the value and significance of a particular project based on professionally informed judgment and objectively evaluated information
  • Historians contribute to the decision on the best method of conserving or preserving an object or place
  • They may contribute to educational and information tools and strategies. These include publications, exhibitions, ands other media-related activities
  • As part of a team in a larger organisation, they may also be responsible for the conditions in which exhibits are managed and interpreted. This may include monitoring and controlling environmental conditions.
