Costume designers research, design and prepare costumes. Their costumes are used in theatrical, film or television productions. They work closely with the producer and designer on their projects. Their work goes from the production planning stage to making and adapting original costumes for performers.
Costume designers have to:
- Work closely with the set designer, producer or director to create ideas which complement their concept of the play/film. They also have to stay within an available budget
- Be responsible for designing, creating and adapting all costume items
- Oversee the purchase or hiring of ready-made outfits
- Be in charge of the costume department, staffing and managing a team of staff. This may include a costume design assistant, costume supervisor, costume assistant and other technicians. The department varies in size depending on the production
- Sometimes be responsible for the storing, returning or selling costumes.
