Administration staff in the cultural heritage sector are responsible for a wide range of tasks. Areas of work can include accountancy, fundraising, publicity, customer care and supporting the management of people and buildings. They develop and manage the systems that keep an organisation running well day to day.
Administrators are needed in a range of cultural heritage institutions. Examples of these organisations are:
- Galleries
- Museums
- The National Trust
- English Heritage
- Archaeological organisations.
Administrators' work varies considerably depending on the type and size of the organisation. For a small museum, they may be responsible for the whole day-to-day running of the museum. For a large organisation, such as a National Trust regional office, they specialise in one area, such as:
- Providing information to the public
- Setting up and maintaining systems, such as for finance, staff records, visitor number etc
- Overseeing cleaning, maintenance and security
- Overseeing hanging / arranging of exhibits.
