Derry/Londonderry has been named as the first ever UK
City of Culture.
Culture minister Ed Vaizey (picture) made the announcement live on the BBC One Show in Liverpool, home of the 2008 European Capital of Culture.
The city competed against finalists Birmingham, Norwich and Sheffield to win the prize.
A new title, which will come into effect in 2013, was inspired by Liverpool's achievement and the effects that being the European Capital of Culture had on raising the profile of the north-west city, as well as the increased investment and regeneration it brought.
On the announcement, Mr Vaizey said: 'This is a truly great moment for Derry/Londonderry. The panel were unanimous in their recommendation because of their compelling cultural programme, the way it seeks to address the city's past and the enthusiasm and commitment of the city and its supporters.'
In addition, the city won for having effectively highlighted the economic and social benefits that the title would bring.
