Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has invested GBP 4.85 million in a restoration project of Sir Walter Scott's home.

Abbotsford House near Melrose in the Scottish Borders has now secured GBP 9 million of the GBP 10 million needed to transform the site into a unique tourist attraction, an important grant to preserve the region's cultural heritage.

Money will be put towards creating a visitor centre, learning suite and exhibition area detailing the life of one of Scotland's most loved writers, as well as additional restoration work.

Colin McLean, head of the HLF in Scotland, commented: 'Through this project, Abbotsford can once again take its place on the world's stage as a tourist destination and valuable education resource.

'Today we can celebrate that this exceptional piece of Scottish history is going to have a vibrant and sustainable future, bringing income to the Borders and to Scotland.'

HLF also announced today (July 27th) three other sites receiving investment, totalling GBP 10.5 million for all four projects.ADNFCR-1392-ID-800006274-ADNFCR
