Govt to abolish MLA
The culture department has announced that it is to abolish the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) as part of the continuing efforts to cut back on costs.

Culture minister Jeremy Hunt proposed that without the MLA, a so-called 'arm's length body', the government would focus its efforts on 'front-line, essential services and ensure greater value for money', while continuing its support for the industries.

Other bodies that have received the axe in the shake-up include the UK Film Council and declassifying the Theatres Trust so it can act as an independent statutory advisory body.

Commenting, Mr Hunt said: 'Many of these bodies were set up a considerable length of time ago, and times and demands have changed.

'In the light of the current financial situation, and as part of our drive to increase openness and efficiency across Whitehall, it is the right time to look again at the role, size and scope of these organisations.'

The department will also look to consider the role and remit of English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the National Heritage Memorial Fund.ADNFCR-1392-ID-800006205-ADNFCR
